Cheryl Bucknam
K-9 Reading, Writing, and Grammar
My experience in the field of education encompasses over 25 years in several capacities. In Region 14, I worked in the elementary special education department as a paraprofessional for seven years, five years as a classroom teacher for grades 2,3, and 4, and seven years as a literacy instructor for grades K - 8. Currently, I am employed by Rumsey Hall School and have been at this school as a Learning Skills teacher since 2016. My lessons include multisensory techniques to engage students in their learning. I also base their lessons centered around personal topics of interest to motivate each student. My goal is for them to view education as a means to strengthen their core foundations, improve their self-confidence, and seek knowledge by remaining curious about the world around them. In other words, have them 'want to learn' and be active in their learning as well.
I am trained in several balanced literacy programs, including Orton-Gillingham. I have a Master Degree in ElementaryEducation, and I am a K-6 certified teacher in the state of CT.

Rumsey Hall School
With over a decade of teaching experience within the Connecticut Public School systems, as well as, my years at Rumsey Hall School; my focus has been on empowering students in the realm of reading. I've dedicated myself to aiding struggling learners, while also providing enrichment opportunities. My primary goal is to collaborate with you and your child this summer, igniting a passion for reading, and ensuring continuous growth in their skills. Drawing from my own experiences as a young learner grappling with various challenges, I've discovered a passion for assisting others. Together, let's create an educational environment where every student not only thrives but also finds fulfillment in their academic journey.
Catharine Cooper
3-9 Reading, Writing, Grammar, Study Skills, and Summer Reading Support
Cat received her BA in Art History and Anthropology at the University of Chicago and earned an MFA in Theater Directing from the California Institute of the Arts and an MA in English Literature from Middlebury College in Vermont. After a brief stint in theater, she began teaching at George Jackson Academy in New York City. Before coming to Rumsey, she taught English at Horace Mann School and The School at Columbia University, both in New York City. As an English teacher, she regularly brought theater and art into the classroom. Cat loves the one-on-one connections she is able to make with students in Learning Skills at Rumsey, and she especially enjoys helping middle schoolers build confidence and discover their superpowers. Cat and her family moved from the city to rural Connecticut because they were inspired by the outdoors and all the Rumsey campus had to offer. After school, you can often find her running in the woods with her Golden Retriever, Maddie. On the weekends, she spends time with her family and bakes a lot of bread and granola.

I graduated from Rumsey Hall School in 2009. After working with special needs adults, I decided to change my career path, so I went to Rumsey as a Lower School Intern. After two years, I moved to the Upper School where I am now teaching pre-algebra and algebra. I live on campus and coach varsity field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse, and I am also a dorm parent to our 5th and 6th grade girls.
